A painter of both the canvas and outside corner…
Johnny Wit is a Boston-based painter whose influences stem from a range of experiences: a childhood fascination with graffiti and street art, a five-year career as a professional baseball player, and off-season stints working in art galleries and years at a high-end restaurant.
A lifelong sketcher, Wit began to formalize his artistic practice during his sophomore year at Boston College, where a painting course introduced him to the expressive potential of oil paint. He was instantly drawn not by the fumes, but by the medium’s ability to convey versatility and emotional depth through color and texture.
After graduating from BC in 2019, Wit signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as a right-handed pitcher. During baseball off-seasons, he continued to paint and refine his craft, eventually transitioning to acrylics and experimenting with a variety of surfaces, including canvases, skate decks, guitars, and panels.
His work is graphic, colorful, clean, layered, and balanced, often infused with pop culture references and a sense of rhythm derived from his athletic background. Wit reflects, “The approach, practice, and constant repetition reminded me of a process that felt very familiar—it reminded me of pitching. The more I thought about the process, attention to detail, and craftsmanship that both pitching and painting demand, the more I realized they’re the same in spirit, just expressed through different mediums.”
